The CISAN is proud to be a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit of the UNAM, one of the world’s largest public universities, with more than 300,000 students, which in 2010 is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Created in late 1988, the University Research Program on the United States of America was the precursor for the Center for Research on the United States of America (CISEUA).
Later, given the priority the UNAM placed on this scientific research, the preeminence of the United States worldwide, and the importance of our geographical proximity to it, the university recognized the need to broaden out the CISEUA’s field of research. It became indispensable to deepen our understanding of the dynamics of regional and global integration and therefore begin the systematic study of Canada. At that time, then, the center’s name was changed to the Center for Research on North America (CISAN).
